Chickens May Not Cross
N borrowed a great little book from the newly renovated Houston Public Library. It is called “Chickens May Not Cross the Road and Other Crazy (But True) Laws“. It is a picture book listing out bizarre, current or historical laws from the state law books in the US.
Most of the laws make you wonder what kind of absurd situation could have led to such a law, for example, “no one may take a lion to a movie theater”, or “it is illegal to lick a frog”. Were these due to one-off incidences, or due to regularly recurring inconveniences?
There are other laws that clearly seem poorly thought through, such as “if two trains meet each other on the same track, they must BOTH stop and wait until the other one has passed.” Common sense is not so common.
Then there are others like “no dog can appear in public without its master on a leash” that just needed the writer to pay more attention during granmar classes.
