Isa Khan’s Tomb

Today I finally managed to visit Humayun’s tomb. There are many things of historical importance around the tomb. Near the entrance is the tomb of Isa Khan. He was a nobleman at the court of Sher Shah (who had defeated Humayun and taken Delhi and Agra). The tomb is surrounded by an octagonal wall with a serene garden inside. On one side is a mosque. There are steps to get on top of the mosque from where I was able to take some photos.

One interesting thing I found out about Sher Shah is that he introduced the rupiyaa currency, and the built many roads connecting his capital to other parts of his kingdom – one of these is the Grand Trunk Road. I had heard of this road while in Dhaka, and saw it in Delhi as well. It actually runs from Shonargaon in Bangladesh to Peshawar in Pakistan through Delhi.

Beyond this, there is the Arab-Serai – where Humayum’s widow had brought 300 Arabs and they lived there. These may have been the Persian artisans who worked on the tobm itself. After that you have to pass through another beautiful garden (Bu Halima’s garden) before getting to the gate of Humayun’s tomb.
